FAIR PARK: Free and Fun!

The Texas State Fair is world-renown for its Ferris wheel, food contests, the Cotton Bowl game and so many other exhibits. In the fall there will be thousands of people elbowing each other, walking shoulder-to-shoulder trying to push through the crowd.

This summer my husband and I took our nephew to see a free auction exhibit presented by Natural Auctions. The viewing times of this auction were listed online along with the location and a brochure of the specimens.

We traveled the red line on the DART rail from Plano to Pearl Station in downtown Dallas, transferred to the green line and rode to the main entrance of Fair Park.

Having attended The Texas State Fair numerous times, I have found Fair Park to be more beautiful when there are fewer people in the park. One notices the Art Deco of the many buildings and the magnificent beauty of the statues all leading to the Texas Hall of State.

We were warmly welcomed in the lobby of Tower Building by a Natural Auctions representative. She encouraged us to take pictures, printed material from the display and surveyed how we found out about the auction. We bee-lined it to the megalodon shark jaw. During the busiest moments in our visit, there were approximately twenty school-age children from a local school on a field trip and ten adults. At one point we were the only three patrons among the exhibits.

There are many events in Dallas, Texas, to keep your kids busy, active, learning and entertained. One does not have to spend loads of money over the summer to create opportunities for learning and fun.
